Szczególny okres w rozwoju polskich miast, będący wynikiem wielu przemian w powojennej historii kraju stał się powodem rozważań o środowisku człowieka, które zostało zbudowane w celu zaspokojenia jego potrzeb. Niedocenienie roli architektury oraz brak edukacji w tym zakresie doprowadziły do wielu niekorzystnych zjawisk. Pozbawione estetycznej jakości, czytelności i spójności, nie dostarczają użytkownikom pozytywnych doznań estetycznych, ani nie zaspokajają bardziej praktycznych potrzeb. Dla wielu ludzi, także polityków, znaczenie witalnej roli architektury w mieście to problem całkowicie obcy. Tworzenie strategii przestrzennej rozwoju miast winno odbywać się z uwzględnieniem aspektów politycznych, ekonomicznych, socjologicznych i, co jest bardzo istotne, estetycznych. Również powiązanie elementów fizycznej struktury miasta - jego budynków, przestrzeni ulic i placów - nie może się prawidłowo dokonywać bez uwzględnienia socjalnych, kulturowych i ekonomicznych aspektów. Zwraca to uwagę na potrzebę zmiany stosunku do społecznych i merytorycznych uwarunkowań tworzenia i rozwoju polskich miast. Celem artykułu jest przypomnieć i zaktualizować historycznie zweryfikowane kanony tworzenia jakości środowiska oraz przywrócić sens definicji, według której architektura to sztuka organizująca otaczającą nas przestrzeń.

The special period in the development of Polish cities occasioned by a variety of transformations in that country's post-war history compels us to consider and reflect upon the environment built to meet man's needs. The limited and underestimated role of architecture, combined with the lack of broadly defined education in this area, have caused a number of disadvantageous spatial phenomena that become the stage set for events forming human life. Devoid of aesthetic quality, of perceptible coherence, they fail to provide any positive sensations and pragmatism to their future users. Is the significance of the vital role of architecture in the city obvious and comprehensible to everyone? It seems that it is not comprehensible, and to a great many people, including politicians, it is entirely alien as a significant problem! Spatial strategies serving the continued development of cities which, as such, become the stage set for human life should be created on the common ground shared by politics, economics, sociology and, very importantly, aesthetics! The binding of the physical structure of a city - its buildings, the spaces of its streets and squares, which often are of any interest to urban planners and architects only - cannot be adequately accomplished without taking into consideration the social, cultural and economic aspects of the environment built to meet man's needs. The fact that architecture, as a discipline of art, one of the most important ones in the civilizational development of societies, is responsible for the existing state of Polish urba-nism has become the reason for attracting the public attention, also through such statements as this one, to the need to revise our attitude toward the social and content-related circumstances of the creation and ongoing development of Polish cities. The issues discussed here serve to recall the canons of creation of environmental quality that have been verified by history, and to make them current again, as they make it possible to restore the true sense to the definition describing architecture as the art that organizes the space around us.
