The paper describes history of selective transfer phenomenon and no-wear effect discovery as well as model of Garkunov phenomenon veryfied by the author.All possibilitiess of talking advantage of Garkunov phenomenon in design, construction and maintanance of machines are presented.It is proved that during appreciation of efficiency of material,design and maintenance solutions it is advantegenous to use operational surface layer concept and methods of its properties estimation.The operational effects of sname lubricating iol additives use are disscussed.
