Lightining protection of distribution lines using metal oxide surge arresters was described. Problem relaying to impulse energy capability of surge arresters was shown and methods to improve their reliability were listed. Review on subject literature was made from historical point of view. Last papers involved on simulation of distribution system response on lighting stroke, describing experiments on Shiobara and Camp Blinding test stations, and dealing with on-line diagnostic of MOAs under system voltage containing high amount of harmonics were presented.
