An Evolutionary Viewpoint on the Reform of Universities

In our times the traditional university system was deeply reformed. The reforms aimed at the creation of a logical and politically attractive set-up that would provide for current needs of economy as well as for students' careers. Effects of these reforms were spectacular, especially in statistical terms. Yet, there are severe flaws in the image of imposing expansion of academic education. In this process, some traditional functions performed by universities - crucial for what Hayek calls the extended social order - become lost or severely diminished. There are reasons to be deeply annoyed with the speed 'pragmatic' substitutes the 'cultural' in the university functions, as it leaves little time for appropriate corrections.
