Progress in information and communication technologies and in geomatics provide new opportunities for protection of monuments and taking care of them. Information about cultural heritage takes new forms and becomes generally accessible, enhancing its impact on development of information society. At the same time, needs for information about monuments as evidence of history shaping national and cultural identity have increased. Among new organizational and technological possibilities particular attention should be paid to spatial information infrastructures, also called spatial data infrastructures. Their essence is interoperability: m organizational, involving all stakeholders, such as governmental agencies, institutions, companies and other organizations interested in the use of spatial data and spatial data services, m technical, related to information and communication technologies and geomatics standards which enable interoperability, m semantic, leading to unification of geoinformation terms and notions used in various disciplines and applications. The information about immovable monuments, characterized on the basis of legal regulations in force concerning cultural heritage, is a kind of broadly understood spatial information and forms a part of the thematic scope of spatial information infrastructure in Poland and in Europe. This entails tasks to be performed in accordance with the INSPIRE Directive and with the needs of information society in Poland. By the end of the considerations some conclusions and recommendations are presented.
