This paper describes the design and manufacturing of a HTS magnet for superconducting energy storage system (SMES). The magnet consists of 7 double pancake coils made of 1610 m high strength Bi-2212 tape (American Superconductor). The winding was epoxy impregnated and cooled with Gifford McMahon cry cooler. Construction of the magnet enables to make investigations in working temperatures from 20 K to 77 K. The estimated value of stored energy in the SMES magnet under the operating temperature 20 K is 25 kJ.
