XRF analysis of trace elements in biological samples - theoretical analysis
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) method is analysed as a potential tool for in-vitro analysis of light element (atomic numbers Z = 10+38) trace concentration in biological samples. A simple model of the characteristic fluorescence radiation generation, transmission and detection processes is proposed. The model permits estimation of the detection limit for various elements, as a function of measurement system parameters. The detection limit values, calculated for various elements of medical interest, are compared with their standard cincentrations in typical medical samples (blood, serum, and urine).
