Drewniane budownictwo sakralne na Pomorzu Zachodnim

Western Pomerania has preserved a large group of brickwork (in a wooden frame) churches, which total approximately a hundred. The objects originate from a period spanning from the end of the sixteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. Churches of this variety were raised exclusively in the countryside, with the isolated exception of the town church in Sianowo, and constitute an essential element of the rural landscape. As a rule, their location guaranteed excellent exposition; frequently, the church was built on a hillock. The church terrain, which in the past also played the role of a cemetery, is surrounded by a stone wall usually made of granite. The whole area is frequently overgrown with old trees. Wooden churches in eastern Pomerania are relatively small. By way of example, the church in Redostów is 7,00 x 12,00 meters large, and the church in Świerzno is 8,30 x 21,30 meters large. The fact that western Porneranian churches were built for Lutheran congregations determined their outer shape. Churches are the best preserved examples of the titular construction. Throughout the whole period of their existence, including the change of creed after 1945 and the ensuing small adaptations, they retained and fulfilled their basic function, namely, of filial village churches. Local communities and the Church guaranteed joint custody. Instances of unprofessional repair were usually necessitated by the unsatisfactory technical condition of the churches, but recent years have witnessed complex and more suitable conservation.
