Chemical thermodynamic combustion analysis:a tool for further improvements of direct injection diesel engines
The analysis of today's engines is based on classical Thermodynamics, in which it is difficult to evaluate the combustion process. With the tools of chemical thermodynamics in using as well chemical equilibrium equations as the formulas of reaction kinetics it is possible to outline the ways how to improve the efficiencies and the emissions even of the best small scale Diesel engines for passenger cars. A Matrix with phase- and component-parameters is developed in order to simulate the combustion process, including high pressure injection, evaporation, ignition, flame structures and flame quenching. Special care is taken for finding the optimum between consumption, NOx- and Soot-Formation. Finally practical systems are prescribed which might replace direct injection Diesel engines in future passenger cars, which will fulfil the needs of worldwide environmental regulations.
