The paper presents basic problems of tunnel service safety widely understood. The problems cover tunnel and construction as well as equipment elements and safety safeguarding devices. Since this is a wide range of problems, only the very basic ideas are discussed. Attention was focused on equipment elements and traffic safety devices. It was emphasized that tunnel design is a disciplinary task in which it is the civil engineer that has the leading role. However, he must be aware that a large part of the task exceeds his domain.
