Po szlifowaniu lub polerowaniu mechanicznym na powierzchni stali niestopowej powstają związki żelaza z tlenem, tworząc tlenki i uwodnione wodorotlenki żelaza (II), (III). W przypadku stali C45 w warstwie tlenkowej znajdują się: Fe₂ O₃ Fe₃ O₄ FeO, Fe⁰ FeOOH + n H₂ O.

After mechanical treatments (grinding, polishing) on the steel surface there are chemical compounds like iron oxides (II) and (III) hydrated hydroxides of iron. Depending on the chemical composition of the atmosphere surrounding worked detail a variety of chemical compounds will be created on the surface. In the case of steel C45 in decreasing order: iron oxides Fe₂ O₃ Fe₃ O₄ FeO, metallic iron Fe⁰ and hydrated iron hydroxide FeOOH are formed on the surface.
