Open top container vessel design problems

The paper is a summary of research work aimed to the identification of principal design problems of open-top container vessels. The discussion of advantages and disadvantages of open-top container vessels is a starting point. Then the review of specific requirements of IMO concerning the freeboard, stability, damage stability, holds drainage, dangerous cargo transportation and fire-faighting systems is conducted. Technical, economical and service-related consequences of hatch cover elimination are examined against the background of conventional container vessels characteristics. The results of vessel safety validation through model tests, as well as intact and damage stability calculations are presented. The final conclusion is that this - up to now - not numerous new class of vessels may be considered as an interesting alternative for conventional container vessels.

Artykuł jest podsumowaniem prac badawczych poświęconych identyfikacji podstawowych problemów projektowych kontenerowców otwartych (bez pokryw lukowych). Przedstawiono w nim porównanie wad i zalet istniejących statków tego typu. Następnie dokonano przeglądu wymagań IMO dotyczących wolnej burty, stateczności statku nieuszkodzonego i z zalanym przedziałem, systemów zęzowych, przewozu ładunków niebezpiecznych, systemów zwalczania i zapobiegania pożarowi. Techniczne, ekonomiczne i eksploatacyjne konsekwencje eliminacji pokryw lukowych zostały przedstawione na tle charakterystyk statków konwencjonalnych. Przedstawiono niektóre rezultaty badań modelowych jak i obliczeń stateczności awaryjnej i statku nieuszkodzonego. Artykuł zakończono wnioskami.
