Modern military aircraft engines

Propulsion systems of modem multirole aircraft are presented in the paper focusing on concept, requirements, state of the art. The requirements, imposed by the multi-role aircraft concept on their power plant are presented and discussed. This paper also highlights the problem of number of engines, survivability, etc. The turbofan engines of primary multirole aircraft both in service and at the development stage were compared and evaluated as well. Their essential parameters which have a direct impact on the aircraft performance: such as, specific thrust, thrust to weight ratio, specific fuel consumption, bypass ratio, mass and other were assessed. The comparison both contemporary engines and their parameters can reveal the development trends in military engine technology.
