HDD systems are among tasks which require prior planning and use of proven practices. Drilling fluid is one of the key parts of the system and is often crucial for efficiency and cost-effectiveness of a given project. For projects with the planned bore volume above 50 m3, it is recommended to use drilling equipment with a mud system that allows closed-circuit fluid circulation. Feasibility study of a project should take into account the technical, economical and environmental criteria of mud engineering. The article presents the principles of HDD works in terms of drilling fluid management. The effects of using open or closed circulation systems are also discussed.
