Przez stulecia architekturze towarzyszyły detale, większość z nich miała znaczenie wyłącznie estetyczno-dekoracyjne. Na początku XX w. ornament został odrzucony. Po okresie modernizmu detal powrócił do architektury w nowych, przedefiniowanych formach. Jedną z nich jest zaplanowana ekspozycja światła na powierzchnie budynków, inną rozświetlone wnętrza, które stają się współczesnym znakiem rozpoznawczym obiektu.

Architectural detail has always been a part of architecture; however, it has predominantly been used for decorative and purely aesthetic reasons. The beginning of the 20th century has done away with ornament al detail. After the Modernism era, detail has had its revival in new redefined ways. One of the new approaches to the use of detail is a carefully designed light installation on a surface of a building; another example is the use of the light in an interior that becomes its contemporary and specific signature.
