A study is a theoretical essay on the topic of senses and sensory perception in culture and art, based on the premise that if we ask about the origin of art, we have to talk about sensory perception. The study seeks to explain and clarify the general basis of European philosophical, cultural and historical roots of what is refered to as modern European poetry. Undoubtedly, its sources are stored in hermetic art and theory of the Antiquity, the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque, often with appropriate theological doctrine. The study refers primarily to Ignatius of Loyola and Teresa of Avila. It classifies basic directions of critical thinking in Czech literary science and assumes its probable influence on Czech poetry of the 20th century. Conclusions are crystallized in essential notes on the work by Czech poet Karel Hynek Mácha, to whom reference is made in the subsequent generations of Czech artists, not only poets, up to the present day.
