Wojna z cenzurą. Migawki z redakcji „Polski Walczącej”

Based on documents preserved in the archive of Tymon Terlecki, the editor of „Polska Walcząca” („Fighting Poland”), a weekly for the Polish Armed Forces in World War II, the article addresses the issue of unofficial censorship. Pieces that had been checked and authorized for publication by both the British and Polish military censors often provoked the ire of émigré government circles, ministry officials and other institutions. Official spheres were particularly sensitive to criticism and reacted indignantly to reports that touched on thorny social or psychological issues. In his memoranda to army superiors, Terlecki stated his belief that to earn the trust of its readers the weekly may serve as an instrument of propaganda and education, but should on no account become an official government or ministerial gazette. Its duty was to voice the doubts and concerns of the soldiers, however seemingly trivial, and resist external pressure motivated by wounded sensibilities.
