In 1972, the regional development plan for Kazimierz on the Vistula was made ineffective as a result o f a joint action taken in this regard by conservation and environment protection bodies. This precedentcreating decision was aimed at securing the preservation o f the outstanding historical and landscape values o f this small picturesque town. Numerous administrative measures were taken at the same time to facilitate activities towards the protection o f the local cultural milieu in the broad sense o f the word. After the lapse offive years since that time and after approval, in 1975, o f a new regional development plan fo r the town and its environments, the editors o f “Ochrona Zabytków“ have asked two experts closely linked up with the cause o f Kazimierz on the Vistula to make an appraisal o f the whole range o f problems relating to protection o f this particularly valuable town and landscape unit. It seems to us that articles on this subject published in the present issue will not only serve as a document but also make a contribution to broader generalizations. The Editors
