The Parish Church of Saint Bartholomew at Jerzmanowice as an Example of the Reception of Hilary Szpilowskis Typical Projects

The paper discusses the parish church at Jerzmanowice built at the beginning of the second ąuarter of the nineteenth century. The analysis of the church s plan and forms of its faęade has demonstrated that the edifice was built according to an adaptation of a design for multiple projects by the Warsaw architect Hilary Szpilowski. The design had been published in 1824, that is, two years before the construction of the Jerzmanowice church was begun. Szpilowskis pattern book, along with a similar publication by Chrystian Piotr Aigner that appeared a year later, were meant to serve as a collection of ready-made designs to be used in the construction of churches in the Congress Kingdom of Poland. ■ The influence of designs for multiple projects by the above-mentioned architects has rarely been the subject of scholarly investigation undertaken by art historians. In literaturę, one can encounter only a few instances of provincial churches which usually only distantly allude to particular design patterns, and the church at Jerzmanowice has hitherto not been mentioned among them, although it faithfully repeats design No. 3 published in Hilary Szpilowskis pattern book, mirroring the original project. Detailed recording works are needed in order to augment our knowledge about the extent of the practice of re-using ready-made designs in sacred architecture of the Congress Kingdom of Poland
