The ecological threat in the contemporary world also affects historical buildings. The contamination of the atmosphere w h ich accelerates corrosion, particularly that of metal, appears to be especially dangerous. Gases w h ich pollute the atmosphere are usually carbon dioxide C 0 2 and sulphur dioxide S 0 2 which appear primarily in the process of burning fuel. The most aggressive of the tw o is sulphur dioxide S 0 2 whose presence in the air increases metal corrosion several times over. In pure air, corrosion remains of small intensity, even w ith high relative moisture. In an ecological situation which generates a vast threat to the permanence of historical relics, their protection must take into account prevention of rapid corrosion. The concepts and theories concerning the conservation of relics, as well as technical solutions, must also alter.
