The article analyzes the last short story written by Émile Zola in the context of the cyclic nature of time and recurring motives used by the writer. Despite what is suggested by its title, Angeline, or the Haunted House is neither a classical gothic story based on the theme of a haunted house nor a pastiche of it. The story is divided into three parts follows the tripartite philosophical cycle of existence (rise, evolution, eclipse), and shows three stages of the mystery, going from an unverifiable legend to its perfectly reasonable explanation. The research methodology involves a combination of discourse analysis and qualitative methods.
