Expulsion, incarceration, incapacitation: policing drinking women in Poland and Britain in the second half of the 19th century (dataset collection)
Despite their cultural, political and economic differences, both Victorian Britain and post-partition Poland shared the belief that women’s drinking was more harmful than men’s. This belief prompted different approaches to policing. The presented data focus on a detailed account of the Girgenti reformatory for female drinkers, which is an example of a formal approach to policing drunken women. Based on the Grigenti case book, we constructed a database containing all the patient details.
