Teren przemieszczeń. Z badań w środowiskach polonijnych na Syberii, w Brazylii i Australii

The author of the article shares her thoughts on her ethnomusicological research of Polish communities in Siberia, Brazil and Australia, conducted together with the staff and students of the Musicology Institute of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and the University of Wrocław. The text contemplates such issues as organizing work in an ‘area of displacements’, research strategies used, music as a medium for expressing and maintaining the identity of the members of diasporic groups, as well as ways for continuing and reviving tradition. The research was conducted predominantly for didactic purposes and had an exploratory nature. The research questions concerned the relationship between the performed music and the sense of identity of the members of the researched communities; methods of cultivating Polish musical repertoire in their new countries; and directions of the occuring changes. The author discusses logistical issues connected with conducting research in Polish emigrant groups, describes these communities and their history and – referring to Bakhtin’s concept of polyphony – deliberates on the genre and stylistic diversity of the registered musical repertoires and their modes of operation in interactions occurring within individual communities, in the context of the majority culture and other minority cultures, and confronted with music performed in Poland.
