Dobrzy czy źli sąsiedzi? Górny Śląsk w latach 1920–1922

Tekst przedstawia specyficzną sytuację na Górnym Śląsku w latach 1919‒1922, wynikającą z decyzji tzw. Mocarstw Sprzymierzonych (Francji, Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki, Wielkiej Brytanii i Włoch), w wyniku której na obszarze regionu po I wojnie światowej odbył się plebiscyt. W przypadku tego terenu ludność rodzima, współżyjąca obok siebie od dziesięcioleci, została niejako zmuszona do opowiedzenia się po którejś z rywalizujących stron, a w konsekwencji do działań, które antagonizowały społeczność. W tekście przedstawiono kolejno: historię Górnego Śląska jako obszaru pogranicza, specyfikę związków regionu z polskością, zarys wydarzeń na Górnym Śląsku w latach 1919‒1922 (okoliczności trzech powstań, przebieg plebiscytu oraz decyzję o rozgraniczeniu obszaru między Polskę i Niemcy), obraz rywalizacji sąsiedzkiej tego okresu, wspartej przez przybyszów spoza regionu, wreszcie trudności i ograniczenia, wynikające z wprowadzonego podziału terytorium.

The text presents the specific situation in Upper Silesia in the years 1919‒1922, resulting from the decision of the so-called Allied Powers (France, the United States of America, Great Britain and Italy) to hold a plebiscite in the region after the First World War. In the case of the area, the native population, having coexisted side by side for decades, was, as it were, forced to take sides with one of the rival parties and, consequently, to take actions that antagonised the community. The text presents subsequently: the history of Upper Silesia as a border[1]land area, the specifics of the region’s links with Polishness, an overview of events in Upper Silesia in 1919‒1922 (the circumstances of the three uprisings, the course of the plebiscite and the decision to divide the area between Poland and Germany), a picture of the neighbourly rivalry of the period, supported by newcomers from outside the region, and finally the difficulties and constraints arising from the division of the territory.
