Sailing the seas as perceived by youth – images, fears and expectations

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań przeprowadzonych wśród młodzieży szkolnej w wieku od 12 do 19 lat dotyczących wyobrażeń o pełnomorskim rejsie żaglowcem. Celem badań było poznanie, czy młodzież chciałaby wziąć udział w rejsie żaglowcem szkolnym, jakie motywatory, obawy i bariery są formułowane przez młodzież oraz jakie są jej oczekiwania w stosunku do takiego rejsu. Udział w badaniu wzięło 88 uczniów ze szkół niemających tradycji morskich oraz 61 uczestników rejsów Szkoły pod Żaglami Krzysztofa Baranowskiego zorganizowanej na żaglowcu STS Pogoria. Respondenci udzielali odpowiedzi w formie pisemnej. Z narracji współczesnej młodzieży wynika, że pomimo zagrożeń związanych z negatywnymi wzorcami i ograniczeniami w postaci zamiłowania do wygody oraz niechęci do wychodzenia ze swojej strefy komfortu, postrzega ona rejs jako pełen możliwości rozwoju i traktuje go jako wyzwanie, które jest warte podjęcia. Co ciekawe, dziewczęta prezentują większą odwagę w przekraczaniu własnych granic niż chłopcy.

This paper presents the results of research conducted among school children and youth between 12 and 19 years of age on their perceptions about sailing the high seas on a tall ship. The aim of the research was to find out if young people would like to take part in a school sailing cruise, as well as the motivators, fears, barriers and expectations they have relating to this. The study participants were 88 students from schools without a tradition of maritime activities and 61 students from the Krzysztof Baranowski School Under Sails, organised on the STS Pogoria sailing ship. The respondents provided written answers. The narrative of modern youth shows that despite the risks associated with negative models and limitations in the form of being accustomed to conveniences and an unwillingness to leave their comfort zone, they perceive such a cruise as an opportunity for self-development and treat it as a challenge that is worth taking. Girls were found to be more courageous in going beyond their own limits than boys.
