Zamek królewski w Wieluniu. Część 2: Zabudowa zamku w świetle źródeł historycznych i obserwacji architektonicznych

The article is the second part of the work devoted to the royal stronghold in Wieluń, gathering knowledge in the field of the history of construction. The first part (in the previous volume RW) discusses the history of the castle and historical sources. In this part, an attempt was made to reconstruct the spatial evolution of the stronghold on the basis of historical writing sources and the results of architectural observations in the complex of buildings, in the place of the former castle, were presented. The royal castle in Wieluń consisted of three parts: proper (administrative and residential) and two parts of an economic and service nature. The proper castle, predominantly brick, separated from the rest of the complex by a wall and a moat, consisted of several buildings housing apart from the apartments, a chapel, a courtroom and an archive, as well as a kitchen and utility rooms. The second part of the team – outer bailey (Przygródek), predominantly wooden, was located within the city’s fortifications and housed, among others, brewery, kitchen, stable and prison. The third part of the castle complex was outside the fortifications and consisted of wooden buildings housing a stable, a bath and a bakery. The castle complex in Wieluń was destroyed several times by fires. Repaired and rebuilt, eventually after a fire in 1791, it was gradually demolished. In its place there is now the building of the local administration (starostwo powiatowe). Architectural observations indicate that large parts of the former castle’s building have been preserved in the structure of this building.
