Tri-border areas of the countries diversity of features and functions

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie zróżnicowania rozmieszczenia, cech i funkcji trójstyków granic państw. Pokazano też przykłady trójstyków już nie istniejących, których ślady istnieją w krajobrazie. Na wybranych przykładach dokonano oceny funkcji granic politycznych jako barier przestrzennych utrudniających funkcjonowanie trójstyków jako regionów transgranicznych, np. w euroregionach. Ukazano przykłady trójstyków o dużych walorach przyrodniczych sprzyjających tworzeniu transgranicznych jednostek ochrony przyrody lub regionów transgranicznych, ale obecnie pasywnych, głównie ze względu na sytuację polityczną.

The main purpose of this article is to demonstrate diversity in positions, features and characteristics of tri-border areas of the countries. It shows the examples of some historic tripoints that have left their mark on the world’s topography and landscape. The conclusion is that administrative borders generate geographical barriers that impede the existence of tripoints as transboundary regions. Those could be defined as infrastructural problems such as lack of transport infrastructure, great rivers, or language barriers. The borders could also be created by preferential trade areas or military pacts. The purpose of this article is to show various functions of tripoints, such as tourism or nature protection. The key point is the role of some tripoints within the major cross-border regions, such as Euroregions. It also shows the examples of some tripoints situated in nature reserves or tourist areas that are currently not very popular due to the political situation in some countries.
