Cui bono? The reasons for saving the teaching of Latin in Polish schools
In the last thirty years, the teaching of Latin has been disappearing from Polish schools. The scale of this phenomenon is unprecedented. The author of this paper claims that this process is detrimental to Polish society. The paper presents arguments in the form of exemplars, i.e., short historical narratives, to present the thesis that throughout the centuries the presence of classical education in Western schools has benefited whole societies by inspiring certain individuals to think and act in original, creative and disciplined ways. Classical education is understood here as the exposition to Latin and Greek cultures through the medium of these two ancient languages.
