Nowe możliwości – stare problemy. Przemiany w polityce wobec Romów po 1989 roku i ich społeczne konsekwencje

The text presents the conclusions that result from anthropological reflection on the various types of policy applied toward Roma communities in Poland. The authors compare the most important elements of the authorities’ attitude to the “citizens of Gypsy nationality“ in the early PRL and those operating today after Polish accession to the EU. This kind of statement reveals similar conditions and tacit assumptions underlying the post-war practice of “integration Roma to socialist society” and contemporary policy of “Roma integration”. It turns out that it was fighting the Polish communist government largely coincide with what his impact as a matter of taking the authorities of the III RP. These include: problems with education, employment, the lack of participation in political and cultural life of the country, as well as certain behaviors poorly received by the non- Roma population as lack of social discipline and lack of respect for norms of neighborliness. Both periods differ on the field of counteracting nomadism, which is understandable now when Roma don’t practice such lifestyle any more.
