The article is concerned with the problem of the effect of heated water on Oligochaeta fauna in reservoirs used for cooling in power stations. We still know very little about the connections and relations between the occurrence of the majority of these species of animals and heated water, because studies have not so far been made on the whole of the Oligochaeta fauna of heated waters. Studies made up to the present have been concerned chiefly with the quantitative distribution of Tubificidae on the bottom of retention reservoirs connected with the cooling system of thermal power stations and atom power stations, their biomass and the reproduction biology of several dominating species. The autor’s studies on the Oligochaeta fauna of the heated lakes in the Konin district showed that the results obtained during faunistic research can also serve to estimate the degree to which the water is heated. Observations on communities of Oligochaeta species and the progressive changes in their structure and species composition, and also the occurrence of certain species of these animals are, in the author’s opinion of considerable importance as indicators.
