An eroticism had been depicted in Japanese art since Heian period (794-1185) as illustrated handscrolls called emaki. In Edo period (1603-1868) high quality erotic handsrcolls called nikuhitsu shunga, which depicted idealized erotic love were luxury alternative for common erotic woodblock prints. This essay is aimed to describe five examples of selected illustrated handscrolls and a woodblock print depicting different and untypical kinds of erotic love. They exemplify: forbidden love, homosexual love between two men, love as a way for longevity, dreaming of love and macabre love.
