Wydane drukiem utwory medyczne Macieja z Miechowa
Matthias of Miechów (1457-1523), l’uomo universale of the Renaissance, is mainly known for being the author of historical works covering the ethnogenetic Sarmatian myth. He also authored two printed works on medicine, namely Contra sevam pestem regimen accuratissimum, for the first time published in 1508 in Cracow, and Conservatio
sanitatis which was published in 1522, also in Cracow. The former work deals with methods of prevention of pestilence, including pious prayers and specific matters that should be avoided or applied. The second piece discusses the question of air, food (especially bread), wine, other drinks and water, and their influence on human health. As far as the style is concerned, Conservatio sanitatis resembles scholastic dispute. There is
also Fructuosa doctrina de sanguinis missione of 1508, which has also been attributed to Matthias of Miechów. Nowadays, however, we do not attribute this work to Miechowita. The two other works, mentioned previously, are the first printed traces of the history of Polish medicine, as regarded by Henryk Barycz.
