Th is article aims to demonstrate - using selected examples of English Medieval poetry as well as Polish Renaissance and Baroque works - the way poets applied their knowledge of astrology, which modern researchers defi ne as metaphor. Astrology, the study of the geocentric Cosmos, today a historical science, was ultimately formulated in Ptolemy’s time. As one of the seven liberal arts (septem artes liberales) it constituted the basis of education from late Antiquity to Medieval universities, surviving until as late as the 18th century.
