Linguistic and cultural image of Friday in Romanian folk calendar in the Romance-Slavic meeting of languages and cultures

The language – described by ethnologists as a part of culture and as its product – is, at the same time, a means for serving to preserve this culture and its transmission between generations. Ethnolinguistic research which contributes to the description of the way of its expression, and which shows relations between linguistic description and the view of the world, can be also a useful tool in the process of foreign language teaching in a situation, in which – as it was stated repeatedly – the only knowledge of a language, which turns out to be insufficient for an act of communication to be completely successful. Our point of departure are different forms recorded in language (syntagmas, set expressions, proverbs), which contain the lexeme vineri (‘Friday’). Its review proves, that, in Romanian, the preservation of the vestiges of pre-Christian and Christian traditions related to this day.
