"Gardzienice Is a Curiosity Representing a Completely Different World." A Compilation on Włodzimierz Staniewski’s Theatre Workshop by Patrícia PásztRenowned for its innovative theatrical solutions, Gardzienice company was founded by Włodzimierz Staniewski in 1977 and is still operating in the formerly backward rural area of eastern Poland. In contrast to his one-time master, Grotowski, Staniewski has represented a more open theatre model from the outset. He remembers when the young theatre group was trying to connect with the local people as follows: “Our idea was to go from village to village and work with the locals, and I wanted to combine traditional forms of dance, theatre and music with avant-garde theatre forms.” The company is currently organizing expeditions all over the world, drawing inspiration from traditional local and archaic cultures, primarily from ancient Greek and Far Eastern theatrical traditions.
