Platońska apoteoza geometrii

The paper analyses an impact of Pythagorean mathematics on Plato’s philosophy. It tries to show that very positive Plato’s attitude toward geometry, exemplified by the inscription placed over the door of his school and saying "let no one destitute of geometry enter my doors", was justified by the state of mathematics of those days, in which a discovery of incommensurables (the irrational numbers as we call them now) forced the Pythagoreans to found mathematics on the base of geometry.

Artykuł analizuje wpływ pitagorejskiej matematyki na filozofię Platona. Jego celem jest pokazanie, iż bardzo pozytywny stosunek Platona do geometrii, czego przykładem miał być napis umieszczony nad wejściem do Akademii głoszący "Niech nie wchodzi tu nikt, kto nie zna się na geometrii", był uzasadniony aktualnym stanem ówczesnej matematyki, w której odkrycie wielkości niewspółmiernych (albo niewymiernych, jak nazywamy je dzisiaj) skłoniło Pitagorejczyków do oparcia matematyki na geometrii.
