Preferences of female aquarium guppies in relation to males of own and foreign strain.

Dobór płciowy uznawany jest za ważny czynnik w ewolucji organizmów. Jednym z mechanizmów działania doboru płciowego jest selektywne wybieranie partnerów przez samice na podstawie ich ornamentów płciowych. Celem poniższej pracy było zbadanie preferencji samic dwóch szczepów akwariowych gupików (Poecilia reticulata). Aby go osiągnąć wykonano test dychotomiczny, w którym sprawdzono, czy samice reagują silniej na samca własnego lub obcego szczepu. Odpowiedzi obu szczepów istotnie różniły się od siebie, przy czym samice szczepu triangli preferowały samce własnej rasy, natomiast samice dwumieczy nie wykazały istotnej preferencji względem jednego szczepu.

Sexual selection is believed to be an important factor in evolution of organisms. One of the mechanisms of sexual selection is choice of partners by females based on their sexual ornamentation. The aim of this study was to examine the preferences of females of two strains of aquarium guppies (Poecilia reticulata). For this purpose a standard dichotomous test was conducted, which examined whether females respond more strongly to the males own or a foreign strain. Responses of both strains differed significantly from each other, while females of black Triangle tail guppy preferred males of their own race and females of red-blue Double swordtail guppy showed no significant preferences for each strain.
