Narrative identity of young adults who are blind and their attitude towards their own disability

Celem niniejszej pracy było przedstawienie podstawowych właściwości tożsamości narracyjnej młodych osób dorosłych z dysfunkcją narządu wzroku oraz ich powiązania z postawą wobec własnej niepełnosprawności. Badania przeprowadzono w grupie sześciu osób: trzech niepełnosprawnych od urodzenia oraz trzech ociemniałych. W badaniu posłużono się metodą wywiadu narracyjnego Historia Życia D. P. McAdamsa oraz wywiadu częściowo ustrukturalizowanego na temat koncepcji własnej niepełnosprawności badanych osób. Dokonano jakościowej analizy treści wywiadów, która umożliwiła poddanie refleksji badanych konstruktów psychologicznych. Wyniki badania wskazują, że niepełnosprawność jest istotnym składnikiem tożsamości narracyjnej badanych osób. Można zaobserwować pewne tendencje dotyczące powiązania poszczególnych składników tożsamości narracyjnej oraz postawy wobec własnej niepełnosprawności. Dyskutowane są możliwe zastosowania uzyskanych wyników w praktyce psychologicznej.

The aim of the thesis is to present the basic characteristics of the narrative identity of young adults with visual impairment and their connection with the attitude towards one’s own disability. The research was conducted on a group of six participants: three of them disabled from birth and three got blind. In the research, the McAdams’ Life Story narrative interview was used together with a semi- structured interview concerning the concept of one’s own disability. A qualitative analysis of the interviews’ content was made, which enabled a reflection on the psychological constructs being investigated. The results indicate that the disability is a significant part of the narrative identity of the participants. Certain tendencies can also be observed with regard to the connections between respective components of the narrative identity and the attitude towards one’s own disability. Possible applications for psychological practice of the results obtained are discussed.
