Status, officium, splendor. The titulature of the princes Sanguszko from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century

Przedmiotem niniejszej rozprawy jest tytulatura litewskich książąt Sanguszków, jednej z linii Giedyminowiczów, w okresie od XV do XVIII wieku. Konstrukcja pracy dzieli się na trzy główne części. Pierwsza, składająca się z dwóch rozdziałów, przedstawia problematykę tytulatury rodowej w okresie staropolskim jako przedmiot badań historycznych oraz omawia stan badań nad dziejami książąt Sanguszków do końca XVIII wieku. Druga część stanowi zasadniczą część rozprawy, która jest poświęcona analizie rozwoju tytulatury książęcej Sanguszków. Analiza ta dowodzi, że zmiany zachodzące w brzmieniu poszczególnych elementów tytulatury stanowiły wierne odzwierciedlenie znaczenia politycznego i społecznego (status) oraz pozycji urzędniczej (officium) Sanguszków, jako książąt o dynastycznym pochodzeniu w późnym średniowieczu i nowożytności. W ten sposób, jako nośnik takich treści, tytulatura stanowiła bardzo ważne narzędzie propagandy splendoru rodowego książąt (splendor), mając charakter „środka masowego przekazu” w tamtej epoce. Ostatnią część pracy stanowi aneks źródłowy w postaci katalogu tytulatury książąt Sanguszków od połowy XIV do końca XVIII wieku.

The subject of this thesis is the titulature of the Lithuanian princes Sanguszko, a line of the Gediminas dynasty, in the period from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The construction of the work is divided into three main parts. The first one, consisting of two chapters, presents the issue of the ancestral titulature in the Old Polish period as a subject of historical research and discusses the state of research on the history of the princes Sanguszko to the end of the eighteenth century. The second part is an essential part of the thesis. It is devoted to the analysis of the development of the titulature of the princes Sanguszko. The analysis shows that changes in the form of particular elements of the titulature faithfully reflected the political and social significance (status) and clerical position (officium) of the Sanguszko as the princes of dynastic birth in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. By that means, as a carrier of this type of content, the titulature was a very important instrument of the propaganda of the ancestral splendor of the princes Sanguszko (splendor), having the nature of the “measure mass media” of that period. The last part of the work is an appendix in the form of the catalog of the titulature of the princes Sanguszko since the mid-fourteenth to the end of the eighteenth century.
