Image of Canada and the USA in the Diaries of Polish Emigrants in the Early 20th Century

The thesis presents the image of Canada and the USA in the diaries of Polish emigrants at the turn of 20th century. It is devoted to the process of emigration of Polish farmers to the United States and Canada from 1890s to 1920s. The thesis presents reasons and directions of emigration and immigrants’ living conditions. Moreover, the author compares emigration to Canada with the one to the USA taking into account the living conditions of these two countries. The aim of the thesis is to show the differences between the emigrants’ expectations for new country and the real situation there and the contrast in emigrants’ lives in the receiving countries. The thesis also analyses the consequences of emigration and remigration for Poland after World War I.

Praca przedstawia obraz Kanady i USA w pamiętnikach polskich emigrantów z początku XX wieku. Poświęcona jest zjawisku emigracji chłopów z ziem polskich do Stanów Zjednoczonych i Kanady od lat 90. XIX w. do lat 20. XX w. Praca przedstawia przyczyny i kierunki emigracji, a także warunki życia imigrantów. Ponadto autorka dokonała porównania zjawiska emigracji do Kanady z wyjazdami do Stanów Zjednoczonych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem warunków życia w obu krajach. Celem pracy jest wykazanie różnic pomiędzy oczekiwaniami emigrantów wobec nowego kraju, a stanem faktycznym oraz porównanie życia emigrantów w krajach docelowych. Ponadto w pracy poruszony został problem konsekwencji emigracji oraz reemigracji do Polski po I wojnie światowej.
