Film Adaptations of John Steinbecks "Of Mice and Men", "The Grapes of Wrath" and "East of Eden"

Praca pod powyższym tytułem analizuje filmowe adaptacje powieści „Of Mice and Men” (1992, reż. Gary Sinise), „The Grapes of Wrath” (1940, reż. John Ford) oraz „East of Eden” (1955, reż. Elia Kazan) Johna Steinbecka, porównując je z ich literackimi pierwowzorami. Filmowe adaptacje omawiane są w kolejnych trzech rozdziałach pracy. Każdy zawiera analizę fabuły filmowej, porównywanej z fabułą powieści, a także przedstawienie bohaterów poszczególnych powieści na ekranie. Różnice ukazują różne podejścia reżyserów do prozy Johna Steinbecka, a także umożliwiają wyciągnięcie wniosków na temat innych czynników decydujących o kształcie filmowej adaptacji, takich jak normy kulturowe i filmowe, które w przypadku analizowanych adaptacji zdają się być szczególnie silne. Dlatego też każda z omawianych adaptacji ma swój szczególny charakter.

The thesis under the above title offers an analysis of film adaptations of John Steinbeck's novels: “Of Mice and Men” (1992, directed by Gary Sinise), “The Grapes of Wrath (1940, directed by John Ford) and “East of Eden” (1955, directed by Elia Kazan), comparing them with their literary sources. The film adaptations are discussed in the three chapters of the thesis. Each of them analyzes the film plot, compared with that of the novel, and the presentation of characters in the novel and on the screen. The differences reveal the directors' approach to John Steinbeck's prose and allow conclusions about other factors influencing film adaptation, such as cultural background and cinematic norms. Thus each of the film adaptations retains its specific character.
