The Search for Identity in the Selected Chicano Novels

The subject of the present thesis is identity and its formation discussed in two 20th century Chicano novels – Pocho by José Antonio Villarreal and George Washington Gómez by Américo Paredes. The novels are classified as 'border writing', an important term when dealing with Chicano literature. The novels' main concern is the life of the second-generation Mexican immigrants and their tribulations connected with their search for identity. Both authors chose the form of Bildungsroman, which allows to observe the stages of identity formation through different stages of the protagonists' lives. Due to the fact that the main characters of the novel are tangled between two different cultures and thus unable to form a coherent and unambiguous identity, they develop hybrid identities. Richard and Gualinto – the main characters of the novels – fail to fully deny their Mexican heritage. Neither can they fully embrace the new American identity. Their tribulations are caused by sociological, political, economical and other factors discussed in the present study.The first chapter of the study briefly sketches the history of the Mexican immigration to the United States as well as the history of development of Chicano literature. It also presents the definitions of such crucial terms as 'Chicano/a', 'border writing' and 'identiy'. The second chapter deals with Villarreal's novel Pocho – the first Chicano novel to raise the subject of identity formation and ambiguities involved in the process of its evolution. Although the novel could not be called flawless in reference to its weak plot and sketchy representation of the characters, it should not be ignored. Villarreal raised the issue that has been constantly present in the Chicano studies since the novel's publication in 1959. The main protagonist of the novel undergoes the inevitable process of assimilation and acculturation, which leaves him with an incoherent identity.Américo Paredes's novel George Washington Gómez, discussed in the third chapter, also presents a Mexican American in search for his identity. The author explores the intense cultural conflicts faced by Guálinto, the main character, from his birth onward, as he attempts to assimilate into the mainstream American society. Just like Richard of Pocho, Guálinto develops a hybrid identity.

Tematem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest tożsamość i jej konstruowanie omówione w dwóch dwudziestowiecznych powieściach należących do nurtu literatury meksykańsko-amerykańskiej („Pocho” José Villarreala oraz „George Washington Gómez” Américo Paredesa). Powieści te powinniśmy zakwalifikować do istotnego nurtu w literaturze Chicano – „literatury pogranicza”. Głównym tematem tych powieści jest życie imigrantów i ich problemy związane z poszukiwaniem tożsamości. Wybrana przez autorów forma bildungsromanu pozwala na obserwacje rozwoju tożsamości głównych bohaterów poprzez różne okresy ich życia. Stan zawieszenia pomiędzy dwoma światami prowadzi do ukształtowania tożsamości niejednoznacznej, czyli mieszanej. Głównym bohaterom powieści, Ryszardowi i Guálinto nie udaje się w całości odrzucić swoich meksykańskich korzeni. Jednocześnie, nie potrafią oni do końca przyjąć tożsamość amerykańską. Problemy te są związane z sociologicznymi, politycznymi, ekonomicznymi i wielu innymi czynnikami, które zostały omówione w niniejszej pracy.Pierwszy rozdział pracy zawiera zarys historyczny początków emigracji meksykańskiej do Stanów Zjednoczonych oraz rozwoju literatury meksykańsko-amerykańskiej. Są tu również przedstawione definicje głównych pojęć – Chicano/a, literatura pogranicza i tożsamość. Drugi rozdział jest poświęcony powieści „Pocho” autorstwa Villarreala. Jest to pierwsza powieść literatury meksykańsko-amerykańskiej która podnosi temat tożsamości oraz problemów związanych z jej rozwojem. Chociaż powieść tę nie można nazwać doskonałą ze względu na jej niektóre słabe punkty, nie należy jej ignorować. Od momentu publikacji powieści w roku 1959 temat podniesiony przez Villarreala jest stale obecny w literaturze meksykańsko-amerykańskiej. Główny bohater przechodzi przez nieunikniony proces asymilacji i akulturacji, skutkiem których jest powstanie niejednoznacznej tożsamości. Powieść Americo Paredesa „George Washington Gómez”, omówiona w trzecim rozdziale, również przedstawia postać o pochodzeniu meksykańsko-amerykańskim w poszukiwaniu swojej tożsamości. Autor bada intensywne konflikty kulturowe doświadczane przez Guálinto podczas przyswajania wartości kultury amerykańskiej. Tak jak wyżej wspomniany bohater z powieści „Pocho”, Guálinto rozwija tożsamość mieszaną.
