Foreign contexts that influenced the development of Icelandic visual art of the XX century

W mojej pracy magisterskiej "Wpływ międzynarodowych kontekstów artystycznych na rozwój sztuk wizualnych Islandii w XX wieku" skupiłam się na problemie badawczym w jaki sposób kontynentalne ośrodki sztuki oddziaływały na rozwój sztuki na Islandii oraz w jaki sposób budowały u artystów pojęcie własnej sztuki narodowej. Opisuję rozwój artystyczny i najwybitniejszych artystów islandzkich XX wieku, specyfikę kulturową kraju i analizuję ośrodki europejskie w których islandcy artyści się kształtowali i porównuję ich prace do sztuki tworzonej w owym czasie w Europie. Analizuję możliwość rozwoju islandzkich artystów pod kątem geograficznym, kulturowym i ekonomicznym.

The subject of my work are international contexts that had a mayor impact in creating the visual art scene of Iceland. The contexts I looked into my work are based from USA, France, Great Britain and Holland and the artistic background of each country. The purpose of the essay is to research the subject how foreign artistic traditions influenced Icelandic artists, who inspired by them created their own national visual art. I start my essay with the beginning of the XX century and Icelandic artists of that time and go through the most important artists in the XX century that studied abroad. I focus on the international meaning of styles that evolved in Iceland like geometric abstraction, neo dada, pop art, conceptual art and land art and analyse the works of Icelandic artists by comparing them with the original work that inspired them at the same time on the European continent.
