Status of the Crimean Tatars in Ukraine

When Ukraine regained its independence in 1991, the newly formed country had to face many interethnic problems. One of the major issues in the Ukrainian internal politics is the status of the Crimean Tatars- the indigenous inhabitants of the Crimean Peninsula, who were accused by the Soviet authorities about betrayal and in the 40s of the 20th century were deported from Crimea to Central Asia. After the fall of the Soviet Union, majority of the Crimean Tatars began to return to the region of Peninsula.Crimean Tatars’ problems are complex and multifaceted. Those, who took the trouble of returning to Crimea, encountered on their way many political-legal, socio-economic and cultural obstacles. The purpose of this paper is an attempt to show the place of the Crimean Tatars among communities of the Peninsula, political and legal conditions of their functioning in the Crimean area. In addition, work is focused on determining the current Crimean Tatar identity in the socio-cultural and linguistic meaning. Work is based on the legal regulations and statistics. Served in it information could become the new starting point for the interpretations within the broader field of cultural studies.

Ukraina, stając się suwerennym państwem, odziedziczyła po Związku Radzieckim wiele trudnych do rozwiązania problemów narodowościowych. Jedną ze znaczących kwestii w polityce wewnętrznej państwa ukraińskiego jest status Tatarów krymskich- rdzennych mieszkańców Półwyspu Krymskiego, którzy zostali uznani przez władze sowieckie za zdrajców i w latach 40. XX wieku, zgodnie z zasadą odpowiedzialności zbiorowej, byli deportowani z Krymu do krajów Azji Centralnej.Problemy społeczności krymskotatarskiej są złożone i wieloaspektowe. Ci, którzy podjęli trud powrotu na Krym napotkali na swej drodze wiele przeszkód natury polityczno-prawnej, społeczno-gospodarczej oraz kulturowej. Większość postulatów wysuwanych przez Tatarów krymskich od początku lat 90. do dnia dzisiejszego pozostaje nierozważona.Celem niniejszej pracy jest próba ukazania miejsca Tatarów krymskich wśród społeczności Półwyspu, polityczno-prawnych uwarunkowań ich funkcjonowania na tym terenie, a przede wszystkim aktualnej, krymskotarskiej tożsamości w rozumieniu społeczno-kulturowym i językowym. Praca bazuje w przeważającym stopniu na regulacjach prawnych i statystykach, jednak podane w niej informacje nie będą ostatecznym celem moich rozważań, lecz punktem wyjścia dla analiz i interpretacji mieszczących się w szeroko pojętej sferze kulturoznawstwa.
