Comparison of the aristocrats' gardens (8-12th. century) with the feudal lords' gardens (16-17th. century) in Japan.

Celem pracy było porównanie ogrodów arystokratów z VIII-XII wieku z ogrodami panów feudalnych z XVI-XVII wieku ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tła społeczno-kulturowego obu omawianych okresów. Chociaż do naszych czasów nie zachowały się żadne ogrody arystokracji okresu Heian, to na podstawie literatury, malarstwa i odkrywek archeologicznych, możemy wnioskować o ich wyglądzie i spełnianych funkcjach. Praca miała na celu zobrazowanie stylów ogrodowych obu epok i na ich przykładzie miała wykazać, że japońskie ogrody choć są częścią krajobrazu i nierzadko są wzorowane na naturze, to ich architektura bardziej odzwierciedla przekonania odnośnie do religii czy filozofii niż jest odbiciem walorów przyrodniczych kraju.

In my thesis I focus on the aristocrats’ gardens from the 8-12th. century as compared to the gardens in feudal lords’ residences in 16-17th century. Although there are no extant gardens of aristocrats from the Heian period, we can obtain some knowledge of their appearance and the way they were used from images preserved in literature and paintings, as well as from recent excavations. The thesis portrays gardens’ styles of both epochs and indicate that although the Japanese gardens are a part of scenery and often are patterned on nature, they are under the strong influences of Japanese religion, esthetic and culture.
