This thesis is a comprehensive study of the phenomenon of self-immolation as a political protest directed against the specific brand of Soviet Communism imposed in Central and Eastern Europe after World War II. It considers the historical processes that produced and shaped the phenomenon in the region, reconstructs the personal stories of those who committed these drastic protest-suicides, and discusses the social and political meaning behind these acts.
