Utwory raperów jako manifestacja tożsamości etnicznej Afroamerykanów

The aim of this dissertation is to explain and demonstrate the link between African American Vernacular English and the ethnic identity of its speakers, on the basis of selected rap lyrics. It supports the claim that the elements of African American Vernacular English included in the songs play a vital role as a means of disclosing and maintaining their users’ identity. The first chapter categorises the aforementioned dialect, clarifies the terminology used to describe it and presents its history, as well as the history of African Americans. It also discusses the contentious approaches towards African American Vernacular English in the context of education. All of these issues emphasise the importance of this dialect in manifesting its users’ identity.The next chapter examines the general link between language and identity. It then explains the specific connection between African American Vernacular English and the ethnic identity of its speakers. It also discusses the notions of rap and hip hop, which are inextricably connected with this topic. The description of these elements makes it possible to understand the culture of African Americans, and constitutes the basis for the selection of rap lyrics as the object of analysis. This chapter takes into consideration the characteristic pragmatic phenomena present in African American Vernacular English, i.e., its speech events and Black modes of communication. The third chapter introduces and exemplifies the unique features of African American Vernacular English, i.e., its pronunciation, grammar and lexicon. This presentation enables the reader to observe the connection between language and identity in practice. Devoting the whole chapter to such a complex topic makes it possible to describe these elements more thoroughly, in order to conduct a more accurate and exhaustive analysis of the songs in the fourth chapter.The last chapter comprises the analysis of selected rap lyrics with regard to the unique elements of African American Vernacular English, i.e., its pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, as well as African American speech events and the Black modes of communication, all of which serve as the manifestation of the African Americans’ ethnic identity. The analysed material is included in the text of the chapter as well as the tables prepared on the basis of the selected rap lyrics, and in the lyrics themselves. Those can be found in the appendices at the end of the paper. The analysis takes into consideration the frequency of the aforementioned elements of African American Vernacular English in the lyrics, the reasons for their occurrence and the role they play in manifesting the identity of African Americans.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest wyjaśnienie oraz wykazanie związku między dialektem Afroamerykanów a ich tożsamością etniczną, w oparciu o teksty muzyki rap. Znajduje się w niej potwierdzenie tezy, iż elementy dialektu afroamerykańskiego zawarte w owych tekstach służą jako narzędzie do manifestowania i wzmacniania tożsamości jego użytkowników. Pierwszy rozdział kategoryzuje omawiany dialekt, objaśnia terminologię używaną do jego opisu i przedstawia historię Afroamerykanów oraz ich odmiany języka angielskiego. Analizuje również kontrowersyjne postawy w stosunku do tego dialektu w kontekście edukacji. Wszystkie te elementy podkreślają rolę, jaką ten dialekt pełnił oraz pełni w manifestowaniu tożsamości osób go używających. Drugi rozdział zajmuje się ogólnym związkiem między językiem a tożsamością, by następnie określić stosunek między dialektem Afroamerykanów a ich tożsamością etniczną. Kontynuacją tej myśli jest objaśnienie nierozłącznie związanych z tym tematem pojęć rap i hip hop, które pozwalają na zrozumienie kultury Afroamerykanów, oraz wyboru tekstów muzyki rap jako przedmiotu analizy. Dyskusja ta uwzględnia również prezentację charakterystycznych dla tej społeczności sytuacji komunikacyjnych (speech events) oraz sposobów komunikowania się (modes of communication).Trzeci rozdział opisuje oraz ilustruje charakterystyczne cechy tego dialektu, na które składają się elementy jego wymowy, gramatyki, oraz słownictwa. Zapoznanie się z tymi komponentami umożliwia dojrzenie związku między językiem a tożsamością w bardziej praktyczny sposób. W związku z tym prezentacji tej poświęcony został cały rozdział, co umożliwia dokładniejszy opis wspomnianych cech, a zatem i dokładniejszą i bardziej wyczerpującą analizę w czwartym rozdziale.Ostatnią część pracy stanowi analiza tekstów muzyki rap pod względem występowania w niej elementów dialektu Afroamerykanów, t.j., jego wymowy, gramatyki oraz słownictwa, a także wyżej wspomnianych sytuacji komunikacyjnych i sposobów komunikowania się, które stanowić mają przykłady tożsamości raperów ich używających oraz w ogólnym zakresie całej społeczności Afroamerykanów. Analizowany materiał zawarty jest również, poza tekstem rozdziału, w tabelach stworzonych na podstawie tekstów badanych utworów, oraz w samych tekstach, w których zaznaczony został pogrubioną czcionką. Materiał ten znajduje się w załącznikach na końcu pracy. Zarówno tabele jak i sam tekst omawiający rezultaty badania biorą pod uwagę częstotliwość występowania danych zjawisk językowych w wybranych tekstach, powody ich popularności bądź jej braku, a także role, jakie pełnią one jako nośnik tożsamości Afroamerykanów.
