Betraying emotions: linguistic analysis of live sports commentary on the radio.

Le présent mémoire a pour objectif une analyse des commentaires radiophoniques du sport en direct sous l’angle des manifestations linguistiques des émotions. Ce genre de discours semble particulièrement porter une charge émotionnelle, qui est trahie par le biais des moyens linguistiques dont l’étude constitue notre but.La première partie, qui expose un cadre théorique et historique relatif au sujet du présent travail, commence par une étude de la spécificité du langage parlé. Ensuite, nous nous intéressons à l’histoire de la radio et la place des émissions sportives dans ce média, ainsi qu’au rôle du commentateur sportif dans la création des événements sportifs à l’antenne de la radio. Nous abordons par la suite la question de l’affectivité linguistique : nous présentons les travaux des chercheurs dans cette matière et nous dressons un répertoire de moyens linguistiques susceptibles à véhiculer des émotions, ce qui constitue le point de départ de la partie suivante. La deuxième partie est consacrée à l’analyse du corpus constitué d’enregistrements des commentaires radiophoniques du sport, transcrits selon les critères adoptés à cette fin. Nous étudions subséquemment toutes les manifestations de l’expressivité sur le niveau lexical, syntaxique, rhétorique et prosodique. Notre étude nous amène à constater que les commentaires radiophoniques du sport en direct se caractérisent par un grand degré subjectivité : la présence du commentateur y est perceptible à travers plusieurs phénomènes linguistiques.

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest analiza radiowych komentarzy sportowych na żywo pod kątem językowych form wyrażania emocji. Powyższy typ dyskursu jest wyjątkowo nacechowany emocjonalnie, co przejawia się poprzez środki językowe, których analiza jest założeniem tej pracy.W pierwszej części poruszono teoretyczne i historyczne zagadnienia związane z analizowanym tematem. Rozpoczyna się ona od rozważań nad problemem specyfiki języka mówionego. Następnie zwrócono uwagę na historię radiofonii oraz wagę programów sportowych w mediach tego typu, z uwzględnieniem roli komentatora w budowaniu wydarzenia sportowego na antenie radia. W kolejnej części podjęto kwestię afektywności w języku – przedstawiono najpierw dorobek badaczy w tej dziedzinie, następnie sporządzono wykaz środków językowych mogących służyć wyrażaniu emocji, które stanowią podstawę dla kolejnej części niniejszej pracy.Druga część pracy poświęcona została analizie korpusu złożonego z nagrań radiowych komentarzy sportowych, których transrypcję sporządzono zgodnie z przyjętymi w tym celu wytycznymi. Następnie dokonano analizy wszystkich form ekspresywnych na poziomie leksykalnym, składniowym, retorycznym i prozodycznym. Wniosek z przeprowadzonych badań pozwala stwierdzić, iż radiowe komentarze sportowe na żywo nacechowane są w dużym stopniu subiektywnie – obecność komentatora widoczna jest dzięki różnym zabiegom językowym.

The purpose of this thesis is a linguistic analysis of examples of live sports commentary on the radio in terms of manifestation of emotions through language. This discourse genre seems to be particularly charged with emotions revealed through linguistic means, the study of which is the aim of this paper.The first part, which concentrates on a theoretical and historical basis relevant to the subject of this thesis, starts by a study of the specificity of spoken language. Then, the author looks into the history of the radio, the place of sport programs within this medium, as well as the role of a sport commentator in the creation of sport events on the radio. After that, the author touches upon the question of linguistic affectivity. Firstly, works of some researchers from this field are presented. Secondly, a catalogue of linguistic means likely to convey emotions is drawn up, which is the starting point of the next part.The second part is devoted to the analysis of the corpus which constitutes of recordings of radio sports commentary, transcribed according to the criteria adopted for this purpose. Subsequently, the author studies all manifestations of expressivity on a lexical, syntactic, rhetorical and prosodic level. This study leads to a conclusion that live sport commentaries on the radio are characterized by a great degree of subjectivity. The presence of the commentator is manifested by means of several linguistic phenomena.
