The Shaping of Ainu ethnic identity in historical perspective.

Praca dotyczy rozwoju tożsamości etnicznej Ajnów kształtowanej przez ich tradycję i kulturę oraz poprzez stosunki ajnusko-japońskie. Analiza ma na celu ukazanie sytuacji z punktu widzenia mniejszości etnicznej w Japonii w perspektywie historycznej. W pierwszym rozdziale wyjaśnione zostały terminologia, definicje dotyczące etniczności, jej granic oraz tożsamości etnicznej, poruszające również zagadnienia związane z nacjonalizmem. Dodatkowo zarysowany został problem mniejszości etnicznych, by przejść do omawiania tożsamości etnicznej Japończyków i Ajnów. W drugim rozdziale przedstawiona została kultura ajnuska, system wierzeń oraz organizacji społeczeństwa, które stanowią ważne czynniki kształtujące tożsamość Ajnów i tworzą dziedzictwo ich kultury po czasy współczesne. Ostatni rozdział dotyczył opisu stosunków japońsko-ajnsukich. Udowadnia, że żadna grupa etniczna nie może istnieć bez drugiej, nawzajem na siebie one wpływają i oddziałują. Przedstawiono również przebieg formowania się organizacji proajnuskich i ich wpływu na społeczeństwo ajnuskie i japońskie. Zaprezentowano także pozytywne i negatywne skutki etnoturystyki, która w ostatnim czasie stała się istotnym czynnikiem kształtującym tożsamość Ajnów.

The paper deals with the development of the Ainu ethnic identity shaped by their tradition and culture and through the ainu-japanese relations. The analysis aims to show the situation from the perspective of an ethnic minority in Japan in a historical perspective. The first chapter explains the terminology, definitions of ethnicity, its boundaries and ethnic identity, issues of nationalism. Additionally, the problem of ethnic minorities was mantioned due to discussing the ethnic identity of Japanese and the Ainu. The second chapter presents the ainu culture, belief system and civil society organizations, which are important factors in shaping the identity of the Ainu people and create a legacy of their culture in modern times. The final chapter concerned the description of the ainu-japanese relations. It proves that no ethnic group can't exist without the other, they mutually influence each other and interact. It also presents the course of the formation of the pro-ainu organization and their impact on the Ainu society and Japanese society. Finally, the paper presents positive and negative effects etnotourism, which has recently become an important factor in shaping of the Ainu.
