On the threshold of initiation. The rites of passage in Sofia Coppola’s "Virgin Suicides" and Peter Weirs "Picnic at Hanging Rock"

Niniejsza praca skupia się na zestawieniu ze sobą dwóch filmów – "Przekleństw niewinności" (1999) Sofii Coppoli oraz "Pikniku pod Wiszącą Skałą" (1975) Petera Weira. Tym, co łączy oba obrazy jest motyw tajemnicy. Na mniej lub bardziej burzliwej drodze dojrzewania bohaterki po prostu znikają. Kluczem do rozwiązania zagadki będzie prześledzenie rytuałów, które pozwalają im pójść „dalej” – poza to, co dotąd znane i bezpiecznie. Psychologiczna oraz symboliczna analiza rytuałów inicjacji pomóc ma spojrzeć na proces dojrzewania z szerszej perspektywy.

This essay focuses on the comparison between two films - Sofia Coppola's "Virgin Suicides" (1999) and Peter Weir's "Picnic at Hanging Rock" (1975). What links these two movies is the motif of mystery. On their more or less turbulent way towards maturity the heroines simply disappear. The key to resolve this mystery will consist in an analysis of the rituals – the rituals that let them move far beyond what, until this point, has been well-known and secure. Psychological and symbolical analysis of these rites of passage will help us perceive the process of growing up from the wider perspective.
